Litter Free Coast and Sea gets a helping hand from Screwfix

Screwfix staff from the Yeovil Head Office are celebrating their achievement completing a beach clean at Chesil Beach in Portland on the 10th August. 46 employees from the Digital Development department took part in the day helping clear up litter and educate the community on how to reduce waste on the beach.

Kerina Foote, event organiser comments: “This year I was tasked with organising a team away day whilst doing something good for charity. I came across the Litter Free Coast and Sea charity, and reached out to Natalie Poulter to arrange a beach clean for one our heritage beaches. The charity provided the equipment to pick up litter, and Taylors Coaches kindly provided a coach at a reduced rate. It was a perfect team day with great weather. Lots of the locals commented on how lovely it was to see us cleaning not only for the community but for the marine life as well.”

Litter Free Coast and Sea is a community campaign to reduce marine and beach litter, as well as improving bathing water quality. They encourage local communities, businesses and individuals to help clear up their local beach to deliver clean, safe waters for swimming, fishing, sailing, watersports and wildlife along with clean, safe beaches to have fun and relax on.

Natalie Poulter from Litter Free Coast and Sea said: ‘We’re delighted that Screwfix wanted to help volunteer and chose a cause which has such a significant impact on the local area’s economy. The team worked hard to collect a huge amount of dropped, left and washed up litter from the beach at Chesil Cove, meaning it’s no longer a risk to the marine environment or an unsightly mess on the beach. It’s important to remember that cleaning up is only half of the story though, and each of the participants  took away a leaflet with information on how they can help spread the message of preventing beach litter at source, both at home and at work, to help create a Litter Free Coast and Sea”.
