Screwfix employees raise money for The Screwfix Foundation in an 18-hole golf competition

Screwfix staff, customers and members of the local community in Swansea are celebrating after raising £340 by competing in an 18-hole golf competition to generate much needed funds for The Screwfix Foundation.

Earlier this month staff from the Swansea Screwfix store ran an all day 18-hole golf competition at Mond Valley Golf Course, taking on a range of slopes, bunkers and ponds while negotiating the rough. The competition attracted 26 participants all of different ages and all with varying levels of golfing experience. The competition involved a full day of golf followed by dinner, a raffle and an award presentation.

One of the highlights of the day was when 72 years old golfer, Idris James, struck a hole in one on the 15th hole. It was his eighth hole in one throughout his golfing career which topped off his day.

Idris’ perfect drive won him the awards for “Nearest Pin” and “Hole in One”. Trophies were also awarded for the “Longest Drive” and “Female Competitor”, as well as for first, second and third places; the competition winner being Shaun Crocker who scored 34 points and cleared the field from second place by a single point.

Paul Jones, Manager of the Screwfix store in Swansea and competition organiser comments: “Although the weather wasn’t on our side it didn’t dampen the spirits of our competitors. Everyone who took part or supported the event thoroughly enjoyed the day and were delighted that they could engage in such a fun activity which raised money to The Screwfix Foundation, who support valuable community projects across the UK.”

The Screwfix Foundation launched in April last year and donates much needed funding to help a variety of projects, from repairing buildings and improving facilities in deprived areas, to decorating the homes of people living with sickness or disability.

It works with two national charity partners, Barnardo’s children’s charity and Macmillan Cancer Support, as well as lending a welcome helping hand to smaller, local registered charities behind projects which involve fixing, maintaining or repairing buildings or facilities for those in need. Relevant projects in Swansea are invited to apply online for a share of the funding at screwfixfoundation.com.

John Mewett, trustee of The Screwfix Foundation said: “The Screwfix Foundation relies on the money raised by fundraising events across the country in and around our Screwfix stores. We’re delighted that colleagues and customers in Swansea have rallied behind the charity by doing this fantastic community event to raise money which we will then donate to our well deserving national and local charity partners.”
