Screwfix opens fourth distribution centre to support expanding store network
Multi-channel trade retailer Screwfix, part of Kingfisher plc, is expanding its distribution base to meet the needs of its growing store network by building a new warehouse in Prologis Park Fradley, near Lichfield.
Construction work on the 562,000 sq. ft. site, which is the size of seven football pitches, will commence in December 2016, creating 200 new jobs initially – rising to 700 over the next five years.
The new warehouse will join Screwfix’s other distribution and fulfilment centres in Prologis Park Stafford and Trentham to service the stock needs of its expanding store network, which currently totals 490 sites, with a new store opening each week. The purpose-built site has been designed to meet Screwfix’s logistics infrastructure requirements needed to support its growth plan.
Martin Lee, Supply Chain, Logistics and IT Director, Screwfix comments: “The decision to construct a warehouse near Lichfield was taken to ensure we have the logistics infrastructure to support the needs of our expanding business. Adding one store per week to our network means we need to make sure we have the stock distribution in place to enable our busy trade customers to get what they want, when they need it from the nearest Screwfix, so they can get back to the job as quickly as possible.
“We will initially be recruiting 200 new warehouse colleagues and drivers and the number of roles required will grow to 700 to support its growth plan, representing a significant employment opportunity for the local community.”
Sustainability is at the centre of the warehouse’s design with use of the latest technology including solar PV panels, LED lighting and rainwater harvesting planned to ensure the environmental impact of the site is minimised.
The new warehouse will be operated by Wincanton on behalf of Screwfix and recruitment for the new roles will begin in September 2017.
