St Leonard’s first Screwfix store is declared a runaway success

Screwfix is celebrating with its most recent store opening its doors on Ponswood Industrial Estate, Theaklen Drive which officially opened on Thursday 12th February. The store had a successful launch weekend with hundreds of customers eager to get their hands on a bargain.

The St Leonards Screwfix store is part of the company’s nationwide store expansion plan, which saw the retailer open 60 new UK stores in 2014 with a further 50 to be added in 2015. The company uses its own innovative retail model, which aims to provide its customers with outstanding service, together with value and convenience. Already 91% of the UK population is within a 30 minute drive of a Screwfix store.

Screwfix’s St Leonard’s Store Manager David Edwards said: “We chose to open a new store in St Leonards because it’s a growing town with a great trade presence. Many of our customers have already shopped with us at our Bexhill and Eastbourne stores and are delighted to see us here, as they no longer have to travel so far.”

“Our celebration period, which ran from Thursday 12th February and throughout the weekend until Sunday 15th February, attracted hundreds of customers and we are looking forward to welcoming many more local people over the coming months. We have received fantastic support from the local community, who have all shown a keen interest in the store. It has been extremely exciting that we have already attracted repeat business and we are all enjoying getting to know new customers.”

Councillor Jeremy Birch opened the store on 12 February by participating in Screwfix’s traditional ‘cutting of the chain’ ceremony.  Screwfix’s St Leonards store is a part of the newly refurbished energy efficient units at Ponswood Industrial Estate, specifically designed to make the building up to 25% more energy efficient.

Another aspect of Screwfix’s nationwide stores initiative is that the company is looking to become actively involved with local charities through its own registered charity arm The Screwfix Foundation, which supports local charities and community projects with donations for projects involving fixing, repairing or maintaining buildings. Steve Sampson attended the launch event on behalf of The Seaview Project – a local charity which provides an open access resource centre to over 1000 vulnerable individuals who suffer with problems such as drug and alcohol addiction, homelessness and offending behaviour.

Steve, Trustee of The Seaview Project, was presented with a cheque for £1000 which will contribute towards the upgrade and refurbishment of the kitchen area at the centre.

Steve comments: “We are so grateful to The Screwfix Foundation for donating these essential funds to The Seaview Project. This will help to improve the facilities at the centre and enable us further better our services. We’d like to thank everyone who was involved in the fundraising.”

Screwfix staff get directly involved in helping community projects and host charity fundraising events within the stores.
